The day starts at the pineapple greenhouses, a classic stop in São Miguel. The atmosphere here is different. There’s the smell of earth, a bit of humidity, and the warm air inside the glass. Pineapples grow slowly, just like the Azores tradition says. At the end, there’s always time to taste the pineapple liqueur. If you like it, you’ll want a second glass. It’s that good.
Next, the route heads toward Sete Cidades. The road goes up and, suddenly, you reach the Vista do Rei viewpoint. The view says it all: two lakes, one blue, one green, side by side inside the crater. Stopping here is a must. Most people snap a photo or two. This is one of the iconic scenes of the Azores.
Heading down into the crater, you’ll see Santiago Lake, surrounded by trees and lush vegetation. The silence is part of the experience. Before reaching the centre of Sete Cidades village, you get that sense of calm. The village is small, simple, and genuinely local. Perfect for a quick visit and to see a bit of daily life in the Azores.
On the way back, you’ll pass by Pico do Carvão. From up here, you can see both coasts of São Miguel. On one side, the Atlantic Ocean. On the other, endless green landscapes. Another spot to stop, take in the view, and breathe deeply. The day ends with the feeling you’ve experienced the real spirit of the Azores.
